Are you a practitioner working in a conflict environment and seeking to equip yourself with the essential skills necessary to work in fast-changing and challenging contexts? Join us for this online accredited module!

The Centre for Emergency and Development Practice (CENDEP) at Oxford Brookes University and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) are offering an online module exploring leadership, team and self-management in conflict settings.

The objective of the module is to examine some of the essential skills necessary for professional working in these fast-changing environments. In particular, the module focuses on leadership skills, team management skills and skills to perform effectively and efficiently as part of a team/organization. The last session includes a component on stress and stress management and introduces students to a number of techniques that can be applied for self-support, but also to support peers and members of communities in conflict-affected countries.

Indicative themes covered:

Introduction to leadership in complex environments
Leading organisational change in humanitarian and peacebuilding contexts
Decision-making in unpredictable contexts
Team management in humanitarian and peacebuilding contexts
Teamwork in diverse teams
Stress and stress management

The module runs over 11 weeks from mid-September to beginning December. It is divided between 2 weeks of readings, 6 weeks of staff-led activities covering the 6 themes above and 3 weeks of preparation of assignments. During the 6 staff-led weeks, you will participate to stimulating webinars, group discussions, simulation, quizzes and group exercises. External experts will be invited to participate to the webinars. You will be proposed to reflect on your practice and to test your new learning in the field to ‘learn as much as possible by doing’. You will have also opportunities to share with other practitioners working in similar fields in order to learn from peer experiences.

The lecturing team is composed of highly experienced academic and practitioners based all over the world. Facilitators and teaching assistants will be mentoring you during your learning experience.
